If you get involved with art projects chances are you know about the amazing WRAP scheme.

WRAP (Watford Recycling Arts Project) is a win win set up. Run by volunteers and funded solely by membership fees, the scrapstore based at Northwood Hills takes surplus materials from businesses and industry and makes them available to individuals and groups at low cost.

Maureen Bayliss of Loudwater is a regular volunteer and showed us around the warehouse.

“We take excess clean, safe material from companies.” says Maureen, “We usually have a stock of foam, strapping, cardboard tubes and wadding and always have fabric – we get donations from major high street retailers as well as fabric and wallpaper samples and swatches from interior designers and lace offcuts from wedding dress makers. Theatres sometimes donate costumes and old props, shops send ex display sets, factories and printers give us their surplus material or over production. We might have cable reels, hessian sacking, leather offucts, brewers’ tubing, even mannequins. Stock changes regularly and there is no telling what we have from one week to the next… we always say ‘Expect the unexpected! “

WRAP is a haven for crafters and those who make props and costumes for amateur productions or carnival floats as well as schools, youth groups and fashion students,

“Customers just love it.. they come in and talk to our volunteers, ideas are discussed and tips swapped. We have a van on the road that can pick up bulk donations – anything that could be suitable for artistic purposes. We often run themed workshops too – and are happy to run workshops on request”
