To walk the wood yourself …enter from Whitelands Avenue about 200 yards down from Carpenters Wood Drive or from Farm Road, down the horse track.

To become a volunteer  email bgreenshirelane@yahoo.co.uk  The group meets twice a month on the first Thursday and the third Saturday.  No specialist skill is needed and experts from the Countryside Management Service help plan and execute the work.

Philipshill Wood is also managed by a team of enthusiastic local volunteers through weekly working party on Wednesday mornings.

“Philipshill used to be mainly beech for the furniture industry based in the Chilterns, until the 1950-80s, when many old trees were felled, and non-native conifer and other trees were planted.” says Voluntary Warden Janet Anders, ” Now the conifers are gradually being removed to encourage the native broadleaved trees.  We are widening the paths and thinning some trees,  which encourages the wildflowers including several native orchids. We are also increasing the native bluebells which are such a feature, by collecting seed then spreading it where they have been lost under the conifers.”
