“I’d love to go to a carol service with my husband – just like we used to”’ Jean said. ‘But, with his dementia I’m not sure he’d cope now. It’s probably too much for him to be a long time in such a different building with readings and a sermon.”

For the first time, this year Christ Church is providing a special traditional Christmas service on 21 Dec at 3pm to meet the needs of people like Jean and her husband. Carols that will resonate with memories of much-loved past Christmases. Service booklets provided will be in large print, using an easy-to-read font.

There will be refreshments afterwards and a chance to look around the decorated church which includes a tree donated by Van Hage.

Supporting the service are Tracy Brown, Christ Church’s Pastoral Coordinator, and Jill Walton, a Chorleywood resident, a Nurse Advisor to dementia support groups who also supports the Dementia Friends initiative.

“ A diagnosis of dementia can leave people feeling vulnerable and isolated “ says Jill, “ We should make time to understand dementia as well as engaging with and supporting the people it affects.”

“The service is open to everyone whether they have dementia or not” adds Rev David Short who will lead the service, “ It may appeal to people with special needs. We would value feedback afterwards.”

There’s also a new short candlelit Celebration with Carols family service on Christmas Eve (4pm)
