HEARTBREAKING BUT COMPELLING
Maylis de Kerangal introduces her novel Mend the Living, a twenty-four-hour whirlwind of death and life. The parents of a 19-year-old, fatally injured in a car crash, contemplate his heart pumping but his brain dying. The plot covers heart donation touching on trauma and hope and is told from the point of view of the medics, friends and relatives of the organ donor and recipient.

Luke Harding presents the true story of the Litvinenko poisoning as told in his book A Very Expensive Poison. On 1 Nov 2006: Alexander Litvinenko is brazenly poisoned in central London. Twenty-two days later he dies, killed from the inside by polonium – a rare, lethal and highly radioactive substance. His crime?
He had made some powerful enemies in Russia.
Harding traces the journey of the nuclear poison across London, from hotel room to nightclub, assassin to victim.
He looks at how Litvinenko was murdered, who is likely to have arranged it and the consequences.

Ale doyenne and CAMRA legend Roger Protz looks at IPA (India Pale Ale), one of the most popular styles in today’s craft beer revolution – its history, making and how best to choose brews. Sarratt based brewers Paradigm will be at the event
“IPA is a fairly strong pale ale brewed with English malt, hops and yeast, the hops are extra toasty and we have been given locally grown hops from Ricky and Croxley Green and we have created a beer for Roger which we will be serving. We are calling it RPA!”
