Finding a new fragrance can be a daunting prospect, which is why so many of us stick to the same one year after year, however, if you eschew the department stores for a good old fashioned perfumerie you’ll be in the hands of people who aren’t just trying to sell you one brand and who have the skill, knowledge and patience to lead you to your perfect fragrance. It’s an incredibly interesting and pleasant experience as we found out in Rich Perfumerie in Old Amersham, run by the astonishingly patient Mark McCormack. His stock ranges from traditionally floral and musk based perfumes to the the much more aggressive and non gender specific fragrances of whisky, tobacco and leather. Yes, tobacco.
We asked Mark what he recommended for 18yr olds who want to try something different…
“For girls I would suggest Bendelirious, and for boys, Fils de Dieu, both by on trend quirky perfumery Etat Libre d’Orange. Or boys could go for Endymion and girls Iris Prima from Penhaligon’s.”
So, if you are looking for your first fragrance or just think it might be time for a change, we can strongly recommend a visit to Mark. Oh and he has the most adorable dog.
