Claire Sweeney has joined the cast of the national tour of high energy musical Crazy for You playing the role of ‘Irene’ alongside Tom Chambers and Charlotte Wakefield. And the feel-good, high kicking musical production stops off at Wycombe Swan early this month.
The colourful show has a fabulous score from the Gershwin brothers’ songbook weaving ia wealth of memorable tunes, (like I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Embraceable You) into a plot full of mistaken identities, twists, heartbreak and happiness.
Strictly/Holby star Tom Chambers plays Bobby, a banker sent to close down a failing theatre who falls for the daughter of the building’s proprietor and adopts the guise of a Hungarian impresario to save the theatre and win her heart.
“Taking on Crazy For You was a no brainer” says Tom. “It is absolutely my favourite all time musical with a perfect balance of humour, story and singing. It’s like the show dance on Strictly with everything slotting into place in the right order!”
Claire Sweeney was also an established fan of the Gershwin Brothers songbook.
“It was the score that made me really want to play Irene – anything Gerswhin is fantastic. I first saw Crazy For You with Ruthie Henshall playing Polly, Charlotte Wakefield’s role. She’s glamorous with an edge – the sort of character I love!”
The production is slightly different from a typical Gershwin show.
“The traits that other productions have are all there “ says Tom. “ but you also have the cast playing the instruments live on stage as well as singing and dancing.”
