Our stunning December issue cover image was taken by photographer and professional illustrator Max Ellis. On a professional level Max’s work includes developing brand strategy, international advertising, video, record and book covers but on a personal level there’s nothing Max enjoys more than capturing wildlife on camera, especially stags and squirrels.

“I set my alarm an hour before dawn and generally head for Richmond Park at sunrise in search of stags. These giant bellowing beasts with their impressive antlers silhouetted against the mist and the rising sun makes a very strong image. A perfect dawn leaves me feeling like a kid at Christmas time. I am distantly related to the Duke of Devonshire and the family crest features five stags so I believe stags are in my blood!”

Max is also creator of arguably the world’s most famous squirrel,  Squirrelisimo

“ As well as publishing a ‘stag of the day’ on Instagram and Twitter I have my Squirrelisimo series, an inquisitive squirrel exploring everyday objects. The squirrels live in the trees behind my garden. I put things out and they come to investigate. I just capture the moments as they happen – I never use Photoshop on these pictures. My most widely recognised photo is one of the squirrel with a pumpkin over its head – it went viral!”

Max is no stranger to Chorleywood

“My wife Katherine have friends in “Trolleywood” (as we call it) and regularly enjoy socials there. It’s a wonderful community of inspiring people.  Katherine, (International house music diva) has performed at several events. We look forward to many more!”
