It all started with a hand injury and a hospital visit just before Christmas. Christine Ralph bumped into fellow Chorleywooder Heather Davies in an Orthopaedics waiting room when Chris was contemplating her chances of being able to drive post surgery. Heather, mishearing, was confident ‘jiving’ would be just fine and promptly invited her to join her at the next dance class in Croxley. Six months on Chris, husband Graham and a gang of friends are members of the Three Rivers Jive Club and loving every rock step, jockey and spin with DJ Jiveboy and Sandra B.
The class kicks off with a beginners’ hour followed by dancing ‘til late to Rock ‘n’ Roll Disco. DJ Jiveboy, aka Bill Window, is a witty, enthusiastic and competent teacher. Together with wife Sandra and with the aid of a wireless ‘Madonna’ microphone headset he guides the class through the various techniques.
“Keep it compact” he instructs. “Ladies …. The limb must be connected at waist height at all times (not flying up high or left dangling) . so the leader knows where to grab it. …. Guys, keep your hand high not to interfere with the lady’s barnet fair! Be flash and arrogant and don’t look at your feet! ”
Bill has been jiving for 12 years
“ I met a teddy boy who invited me to a rock and roll class. Jiving changes people – it makes them smile. The girls wear jeans at the start and six months on turn up in 50s dresses and sign up for rock and roll weekends!”
The Chorleywooders’ skills are coming on steadily
“Accomplished jivers often join in the early beginners class’ to help us newbies and we swap dance partners constantly so we get to know people. You never feel intimidated. Bill is a fantastic teacher and everybody is friendly and encouraging. It’s great fun and a brilliant way to get some exercise. We can’t get enough! ”
