When Wendy Boatman received a Skydive as a birthday present she decided to turn it into a fundraising opportunity. She took to the skies last week and has raised £2,200 so far for charity
“My husband Richard was diagnosed with Parkinson’s  Disease 12 years ago.  Recently, other symptoms appeared and now we know that he has a slightly different neurological condition called Progressive Supra nuclear Palsy (PSP). Among other things, PSP badly affects balance and eye movements.
When our children gave me a skydive for my birthday ‘just one more off your bucket list Mum!‘, this seemed an excellent opportunity to raise money for the UK association that helps victims of this horrible disease.

I did the skydive on Sunday 6 July at the North London skydiving centre – an airfield in the middle of nowhere.   It was a rainy dull morning and I  was so nervous that I got there at  7.30am so I would be among the first to fly if the weather cleared  – only to find several camper vans full of would-be jumpers with the same idea!  Luckily the sun came out a couple of hours later, and, after a short training – ‘dont grab your instructor’s hands or won’t be able to open the parachute! – off we went.  My wonderful ‘tandem partner’, Chris, made me feel quite safe though the 10 minute climb the plane took to get high enough to jump was quite nerve racking.  The free fall 15 seconds or so was amazing – more like floating than falling; it was also incredibly noisy as the ground rushes towards you at 125 mph..  Then the parachute opens and sudden peace and quiet are all around you. All in all it was a great experience.

Thanks to the generosity of so many  people, I’ve raised nearly £2.200 for the PSP Association”
