The first Chorleywood Cider Club, an offshoot of CW Community Orchard, has just been launched and it is already bubbling into something big – 20 litres has been made to date but in order to reach the target of 100 litres the cider makers urgently need more apples.

“People just didn’t know what to do with all the apples that have grown after our warm summer “ says founder member Dick Mander

“ cider is the ideal solution – the apples would get thrown away otherwise. At Orchard Day we invited people to help us set up a Cider Club and we had fourteen enthusiastic takers.”

After a couple of meetings in the Black Horse, a hands-on session followed and another is planned for next Monday.

“ Last time six of us produced 20 litres of juice in half a day- some were picking apples, some grunching into small pieces and others pressing with the Orchard’s press. We need more apples this coming weekend (26/27 Oct), especially eaters”

After Monday the brew will need two weeks to ferment and then it has to be decided whether it is to be clear or cloudy, fizzy or still.”

Ooh, arrr
