Until12 year old Sasha Burrell became severely ill last February when an infection triggered sepsis, the family had no idea that blood poisoning could develop so quickly in a young person. Sasha’s life was saved but she lost her two lower legs. Dad Andy is taking part in the Santa Fun Run for UK Sepsis Trust on 4 December to raise money and increase awareness of this life threatening condition.
“The symptoms are much like flu: says Andy, “Even trained medics can miss it. The immune system goes into overdrive and damages its own tissues and organs but it’s curable if it’s caught quickly enough.”
Earlier detection could save 12,500 lives a year in the UK
“Sasha has had so much support, especially at Clement Danes School and I wanted to do something myself. I could have written a cheque but I can spread the message this way too. It’s not Kilimanjaro, its 5K in Victoria Park and it’s do-able!”
As for Sasha, she is looking forward to seeing Dad in his Santa suit. Without a doubt she will giggle.
