Chorleywooders have been helping Richard Field with his latest mission in the community of Mukano County, Uganda.
While working on projects at a Children’s Home in the area, Richard identified a serious lack of health facilities and wanted to rectify this.
Then a poster at a timber merchant resulted in a lucky tie up
“ I had bought land originally with the intention of building a school but local people told me a clinic was more important” says Richard, “When I was out buying timber I saw a sign for an imaging facility run by a sonographer called Garvin, a trained medic who had come back to his village to build a hospital. He had laid the foundations and some walls were in place but was running out of money.”
On his return to Chorleywood Richard told Professor Colin Green about Garvin’s predicament.
“Colin runs IMET 2000 which promotes healthcare education worldwide. IMET 2000 lent us money and within two weeks a roof was on the building. IMET’ 2000’s help, together with funds raised in Chorleywood (including the Swillet garden party last summer), means we can progress to the second phase and buy an ambulance.”
In the meantime, more practical help has transpired. Richard had related the story at his Chorleywood dentist and hygienists Mandy Luzar, Carole Brennan and dental nurse Carolyn Trevorrow decided to get involved.
“ They came out and ran a dental camp for 10 days – they saw 400 children and gave out toothbrushes. Now they are organising a dinner dance in Shendish Manor on 9 June to raise more money. We are hoping Chorleywood will support us again by coming to the event so we can carry on doing more work.”
