Fungi on the Common

The crop of giant mushrooms that suddenly appeared on Chorleywood Common  have made a lot of people very happy. Our attention was brought to them by children walking home from St Clement Danes on their first day back after half term. Upon investigation, we discovered that in addition to the mushrooms,  a rectangular slot and a couple of wooden chairs had also appeared.  Sadly, there turns out to be a perfectly reasonable explanation, the craftsmen were Parish Rangers Andy Goddard and Chris Watts. ” We had a lot of trees down from the storm damage so ended up with a lot of stumps,” said Andy, ” it’s good to leave them in situ because they rot and provide a food source for insects, but they don’t look very decorative, so we set to work with the chain saw. It was great fun!”
