In January 2015, guide dog Jester dog paid a visit to Chorleywood Beavers with owner Julie Norris. The group of young Scouts aged between six and eight years are working towards their disability
awareness badge and Jester is one of three assistance dogs scheduled to visit this term.
“Julie told us all about the work of Guide dogs for the Blind, what breeds of dog are selected and why, how they are trained and their working regime” says Catherine Nice, “Julie’s husband Kevin helped the Beavers understand what it is like to not be able to see by blindfolding the Beavers and getting them to spread butter, jam and cream on scones!! It was messy and fun and got an important message across. The children are learning about various disabilities by meeting various ‘helper’ dogs including hearing Dogs for the Deaf and Dogs for the Disabled.”
