Katherine Foot’s beaded skateboard, Caviar, is up for sale at £4000 in Selfridges..the second priciest in store, with the most expensive being a one-off by Rick Owens made out of petrified wood at £9, 470!
The Sarratt business woman had been commissioned to decorate the skateboard with beads as part of Board Games, the themed campaign and exhibition currently in Selfridges, Oxford Street where currently over 50 limited edition boards are being showcased this spring to reflect the rise of boardsports influence in fashion.
Handcrafted with thousands of glass pearls, Katherine’s bespoke skateboard deck is an ode to a specialist manicure
Katherine, who started her Glowbeads business a year ago, has caused quite a stir with her vibrant beads that give the illusion of glowing when light catches them, day or night.
It all started when Katherine brought an iridescent beaded bracelet back from her honeymoon trip to Sydney ten years ago and they were so admired by friends she eventually found the manufacturer and launched her own business.
“I love them because they are unique and the colours make me smile!”
The Glowbeads have caught the eye of many creatives including an Account Director of Nail polish brand Ciaté, whose signature range Caviar is a 3D hundreds and thousands type finish where tiny beads are applied to metallic based polish using a funnel.
The company, who have a concession in Selfridges, asked Katherine if she could reproduce the Caviar effect on a larger scale. The board is described as being ‘glossed with a slick of Strawberry Milkshake pink and coated with multi-coloured sprinkles, giving it that cupcake sprinkle finish.’ but it’s for decoration only.. “Due to the delicate nature of this item it is a display piece only, skating is not advised.” stress Selfridges.
Beading a board was not the easiest task.
“It was satisfying but very fiddly. I mixed six different coloured beads in one pot and scattered them randomly on the board, working in sections and used tweezers to turn the beads to hide the holes. I couldn’t spend more than a couple of hours at a time so it took about five days in total. The trickiest part was the edge, I had to hand apply the beads one at a time. I used about 2300 beads and five pots of glue in total. It was a fab project!
