Double yellows to come

New Year, new parking news…a follow up to our Facebook post re cars parked on the road leading to the station car park, resident Chirag Patel who brought the post to the attention of 3RDC and NCP has received an email from National Car Parks confirming that the road is their land and that “double yellow lines” will be put down “to keep this area clear for vehicles, once done we will also enforce this area.”

Our original Facebook post in Dec sparked off a thread of comments and this latest piece of news is no less controversial. Several people are objecting to the inevitable increase in signage that parking restrictions on the road will bring.

“If you want lots of yellow lines and nice neat roads can I suggest moving back to London or Harrow or wherever you came from.”

It is probably worthwhile noting that NCP are aware of and monitoring the comments on our Facebook page.

For those of you who haven’t been following events on Facebook,  here is a fuller version of the story:

On the 12th of December 2014 we received two early morning photographs from a reader showing both an empty Station Car Park and parking on the road leading to the car park. The response to these pictures on our Facebook page was more or less universal condemnation of the people parking on the road.

“It’s a shame people feel that they are being ‘clever’ saving a few quid, whilst churning up the Common, and blocking the road for other users”

Can I add that people walk along that unlit road in the dark which is unbelievably dangerous as there is no way of getting out of the way of cars leaving the car park.”

“Something should be done.”

The problem with getting “something done” was finding out who actually owned the road which didn’t belong to either the  Parish Council or Three Rivers District Council. It took Chirag Patel several emails before she found the Customer Correspondence Adviser of National Car Parks Ltd, who was able to give the problem a reference number and have it looked into. A week later and NCP sent her the following response: “I have been informed by the car park manager that this is NCP land and we are having double yellow lines put down to keep this area clear for vehicles, once done we will also enforce this area.”

Posted on Facebook, this news has received a very varied response:

“I’m grateful for this as it made driving into the station a night mare”

“Too much traffic enforcement in our village as it is!”

“This is good news. The common was not made available to the public to be parked on.”

“To comply with British parking association regulations signage will have to go up along that road. What a shame.”

The choice seems to be between cars parking on the road or signs on the road telling them not to do so. If anybody can think of a third way, please let us know so we can pass your suggestions on the NCP.
