There’s an inspired new Young Rangers initiative kicking off this summer. The joint enterprise between Chorleywood Parish Council and Friends of Chorleywood Common (FOCC) grew from an idea of Nikki Varnals and Alison Rubens when walking their dogs on the Common. The scheme aims to get children to appreciate the natural environment, recognise wildlife, flora and fauna and really get to know our Common.

“The idea is to encourage them to dip in and out of the woods spotting butterflies, wildflowers and insects, explore unfamiliar areas and get a feel of the lie of the land ” says Nikki, “We plan to do two free taster afternoons over the summer holidays to assess interest. Common Ranger Andy Goddard will lead scavenger hunts and if children are keen to sign up for further holiday activities over the year they can become Young Rangers. Potential activities include toadstool spotting, pond dipping, insect house making, even den building. Ideally children will then educate their parents!”

Children of 5 – 11yrs can sign up to the scheme at the FOCC stand at Village Day, Sat 9 July, and also take part in a ‘Whose Poo?’ activity matching images of animals to photos of animal droppings. Free gift for each child
