Stunning decorations of flowers and fruit filled Christ Church for its Harvest festival on Sunday 21st September. The Grade 2* listed building was looking its best as the three congregations celebrated this ancient festival, with its themes of thankfulness and sharing.
The centre piece was a magnificent metre-high Harvest Loaf made by Paul Evason, a master baker from Tesco in Old Amersham. The tradition of making a Haravest loaf goes back to Old Testament times when the Hebrew people were required to make a loaf as a thank offering from flour milled from the first cut of wheat at harvest. This year’s loaf was preserved by Sheila Marshall-Taylor, one of the Flower Team, by coating it with several layers of varnish. A local carpenter, John Niblett, made a wooden stand to support the weight of the huge and impressive loaf.
Harvest gifts of non-perishable domestic items were given to the New Hope charity by church memebrs and by pupils from Christ Church School.
