“The Heronsgate Horticultural show takes us back to the foundation of Heronsgate as a self-sufficient community of Chartists in 1846” says Alistair Park, “Then, living off the land would have been a necessity and gathering in the harvest would have been a great communal endeavour. Today we draw together in the village hall at harvest time to show what we have grown in our gardens and baked in our ovens. Almost half of the families living in Heronsgate today exhibited something, from garden roses to Victoria sponge; raspberry jam to bread; handicrafts to photos; with children decorating fairy cakes, making sculptures and drawing pictures. It’s a lovely event in our calendar and we’re very grateful to Sally Campbell-Ritchie and her team for keeping it part of Heronsgate life.”
