Textile Designer Nicolette Tabram is never happier than when she has a brush in hand,
“When I went to college computers didn’t exist” admits Nicolette Tabram, “it was all about painting and mixing colours by eye. Over the last few years I was doing so much sterile on-screen work for my job using software like Illustrator and Photoshop and realised I was missing the practical brushing of paint.
Then I painted a chair for my Mum and it just cried out for pattern so I cut some stencils. Somebody asked me to stencil a similar chair for them and from then on I have been constantly decorating furniture.”
Nicolette’s style couldn’t be further from the frantic florals and grape garlands of the 80s, instead think subtle, chic and tonal, with an emphasis on neutrals and texture.
“I’m always picking up pieces in charity shops, boot sales and dumps. I bought some chairs in a church auction – I left the legs natural, painted the seats and went overboard on pattern but kept the colour simple. It worked! A few weeks ago I stencilled some aprons using textile printing ink and a monochrome palette. I was seriously tempted by a gorgeous cherry red ink though! Sometimes I just get an urge to use bright colour.”
