Summer is the best time to check out what’s on offer for autumn term adult education classes
Rosemary Warburg has been a member of the WEA for nearly 40 years. Or rather, a student – The part time adult education organization (Workers’ Educational Association) refers to its members as students and for good reason, the courses are challenging and stimulating and suit anybody who has a thirst for knowledge.
Rosie is Chorleywood & Rickmansworth WEA Branch Chair
“ I was working at Beaumont House School in Heronsgate in the early 70s and a parent took me along to a psychology class. I have been involved ever since, every term brings something new. The standards are high and the tutors are professional”
The branch programme for the autumn term is a case in point. Art and Architecture history specialist Madeline Edmead runs a course on Italian Renaissance, Virginia Brisco lectures on More Archeological Conundrums while Michael Bartlet’s literature topic is Fathers and Sons. The first study day on 29 October sees Adam Smith talk on The Country Estate, from Dukes to Gardeners.
Courses last 10 or 20 weeks and work out at about £8 a session

Chorleywood Fine Arts has another stimulating programme of lectures arranged for the autumn. The term kicks off with Ash Can Realism which examines the work of this group of artists in New York City before the First World War whose subject matter incuded leisure activities like shopping and entertainment. Edward Hopper is considered to be part of the movement although he never embraced the label himself. The October CFA lecture focuses on the work of Eric Ravilious while the first Special Interest Day in October looks at the great Italian gardens of the Renaissance
All meetings at The Junction Christ Church on Monday evenings, 8pm
