If you live in Whitelands and see your garden bushes glowing CW Parish Council would like to know! Chances are any luminescence will be down to Glow worms.
“Glow worms have been spotted in Whitelands Avenue gardens before July (and June) are the peak glowing months and we are asking Chorleywood residents to keep an eye out for them. If they are in the Whitelands area, they could be anywhere in Chorleywood.”
There have been Glow worm spotting walks in the past here parties have been scouring the Common with torches looking out for the fascinating creatures, especially concentrating on Larks Meadow, the May Bushes, the Railway Field, the steep slope behind the Old Shepherd and the land on either side of the railway line. The results were disappointing and no glow worms were seen.
” Glow worms have been present on the Common in the past” says ex Ranger Andy Goddard , “But we don’t know if they still exist there. We didn’t find any this time round but the survey has to be over a three year period to establish due to the complex life cycle of the glow worm, which only glow brightly as adult females for a period of up to two weeks during their life. They may exist in their larval state for two years or more before they reach this adult stage so we are hopeful yet. But if anybody sees any we would realy like to know.”
