Twenty scarves and twelve hats, the handiwork of thirteen knitters who signed up for a free knitting lesson at Chorleywood Craft Festival, were handed over to Watford based charity New Hope this week.
The knitters, some new to the craft and some with rusty skills, had been been challenged to complete the knitted accessories by early December and all had come up trumps.
Three businesses had made the knitting project possible – Sirdar and Yeoman Yarns donated the yarn and John Lewis supplied knitting needles.
The Craft Festival, hosted by Chorleywood Bookshop, was held at the Memorial Hall in October and sponsored by estate agents Trend & Thomas. It was the first of its kind and a complete success.
“All of us would like to say a huge thank you to Chorleywood Bookshop, and particularly Morag Watkins, who arranged the project” said a New Hope representative, “Encouraging people to learn to knit and donate their creations to us is a wonderful way of engaging the community of Chorleywood with our work. These will go to people who are homeless or vulnerable – housed locally – to help them keep warm in these cold winter months. Christmas is a difficult time for many of those whom we help and a lot of them feel that no one cares about them. To go to the effort to create a lovely scarf or hat by hand means a great deal to the people we support.”
