If Sathi seems to you to have been part of the fabric of the village forever, it’s because the Indian restaurant in Lower Road has been in business for over two decades …it celebrates its 21st birthday this year.

Sathi’s popularity is as much about the warm welcome as the menu.

The takeaway lounge on a Friday night is a social hub

“People bump into friends and catch up while they are waiting for their curry!” says Layek

“Our customers are important to us“ adds Co-Owner Mohammed Noor “We are going to have a drop-in 21st birthday party for regulars one day early next year.”

Sathi’s recent interior revamp has been well received, A new entrance porch makes the restaurant cosier and warmer while new wooden flooring brightens up the space.

The menu has been revived too with a dozen new additions to the 100 + main dishes, but if you are guilty of ordering the same every time, tasting something different can be a challenge. We asked the waiters for their personal recommendations and had three fast firm answers.. Shimla Murchi Chicken (marinated chicken with peppers) , Chicken Dansak (Sweet, sour and hot with lentils) and Korai Chicken. All three men plus Laik also gave a shout out for Sylheti Fish Curry. Mohammed confesses to eating everything (after going to the gym) although he has a soft spot for this fish dish because it hails from his homeland – the Sylhet region of Bangledesh.

“White fish is cooked in a special sauce with onion, spices, fresh tomatoes and mixed pickles “

We tried it – (delicious … tasty and melt in the mouth texture, a definite contender for our usual choice) as well as two of the newbies – Lamb Rezalla and Chicken Hariyali which also had the thumbs up. All dishes complimented each other with the combination of flavours and variety of textures, as did the starters Chicken Chatt and Aloo Chatt. Moral – be prepared to try something new and be guided by the professionals who are serving you. You will not be disappointed.
