Thirty trees were blown over on Valentine’s Day and a number of paths blocked in Hillas Wood, Friends of Carpenters Wood tell us.
“TRDC will be investigating to arrange to clear any dangerous trees” says Barbara Green, “Most of the fallen trees were tall, spindley larch which we have been slowly eradicating from the area known as Hillas Wood with the intention of returning it back to its original broadleaf mix of trees like oak, ash and beech. Because of this we are not sorry to see many of these trees go – they were planted in the 1970s by the Forestry Commission who clear-felled an area of ancient woodland and planted these larch with a plan to harvest them for wood, but that never happened. So we are now returning the woodland back to its original state – with a little help from the storm!
