Time to upgrade

Pierre Bosdet of PCFixup advises on the new Windows 10 Upgrade.

Should I upgrade?

Yes, it’s an improvement on all previous Windows versions and runs faster than Windows 7 (on identical hardware). It is also more secure.

Is it easy to upgrade?

It takes several hours & involves up to 5 reboots. Your machine may appear to not be running, or has a black screen, but if the lights are on it is doing something. It can take longer on very slow internet connections. Do NOT interrupt.

Does it cost?

The 1 year free Microsoft upgrade expires on July 29th after which time the £99 license key fee will apply to upgrades.

Does it look & feel very different?

It is very similar to Windows 7, with a neater start menu showing all programs alphabetically. Nearly all software still runs on it, as do most printers under 5rs old. All without any re-installing or loss of programs/apps, or data.

Which Windows versions upgrade?

Only Windows 7 or 8.1. Windows 8 needs to be upgraded to 8.1 first. There is no upgrade path for Windows Vista though these machines are reaching their end of life. We have done several of these at PCFixup by upgrading them to Windows 7 first, & then on to Windows 10, but it depends on the hardware specs as to whether it is worthwhile.

What if I don’t want it?

There is a free software utility, GWX Control Panel, which can be used to stop all Windows 10 reminders, background downloads, or forced installs.
