Skirt before wicket

It was a colourful bank holiday weekend at Chorleywood Cricket Club when, true to form, the bar was drunk dry and legendary memories were made at the annual fancy dress Club Day (Sun  30 August).

“We compete for the accolade of CWCC six-a-side tournament champions!” says Rob Dunstone, “Friends and relatives get involved, there’s a random fancy dress theme and we finish up with karaoke in the night”

And it’s not all about men. There was a mixed game in between the semi finals, Helen Smithson was in her usual role of scoring (she regularly organises scorers rotas for the matches and was the first at the Club to introduce laptop scoring) and Rosie Bradwell, first x1’s wicketkeeper Freddie Dare’s girlfriend, got some top coaching from the man himself !

“The bank holiday matches have been going for 20 years although have only been fancy dress for the last few” adds Cricket Manager Jeremy Hinds, “All in all there were over 50 people playing ranging from 50+ to 15yr olds. There are 17 games in a day including a colts team (under 18’s) and the mixed game. Some of the guys, including me,  have been playing in it for 10-15yrs now since we were teenagers. The main aim is to raise money for the club and have a good fun day for all the families  – we have a BBQ and small games on the outfield.”

The day was followed on Monday by Community Day when four  7 a side team of  locals played.

The event leads up to the end of the season, with one more week of league games to go where the 1st team have a relegation decider vs West Herts and the 2nd team  a league title decider vs Berkhamsted
