Image 3 Chorleywooder Dan Stephen, 14, from St Clement Danes school  trained as a young leader with Hillingdon Outdoor Activity Centre (HOAC), The course is aimed at those who would like to teach sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, sculling or climbing

“We learned a lot – They taught us safety awareness and how to teach others. We got wet, it was great fun and now I have a whole new group of friends who are into kayaking too. We did a few different watersports – I gained a high level in sailing and windsurfing but kayaking is definitely my preferred sport, I passed as an Assistant Instructor which means I can do volunteer work and as soon as I hit sixteen I can apply for a paid instructor job. You can do land sports at Hillingdon too – high ropes and caving. It’s a great place!

Dan also kayaks at Ricky Aquadrome with the Nomad Kayak Club.

“I love Nomad and especially the Canoe Polo which isn’t well known but it’s a great sport. It’s exciting and a mix of canoeing and ball handling skills. There are five players and the goal is above the water. You can throw the ball by hand, or use the paddle to flick it to pass or shoot. It’s brilliant!”

“Our canoe polo teams are really successful and compete both locally, nationally and internationally.” adds Malcolm Stagg, Nomad Club Chairman, “Over the years many members have competed for GB. There are all sorts of canoeing and kayaking opportunities at Nomad. Our coaches provide expert tuition and we run recognised courses. There are trips too – from local tours to whitewater in the Alps.”
