Chorleywood Beavers visited RicIMG_6699kmansworth Fire Station and learned about the equipment and how the crew fight fires.

“Ruchi Mayfield arranged the visit and we met four of the Firemen based at the station: Adam, Ian, Jose and Ricky.” says helper Catherine Nice.

“Ian demonstrated the protective clothing, breathing apparatus and safety gear the Fireman wear when tackling a fire. The clothes and equipment are really quite cumbersome so it takes them a whole to get used to them and they get very hot! A Fire Engine with all the equipment costs about £300,000. As Jose says, that has to be one of the most expensive company cars around!”

The Beavers learnt that it isn’t easy driving a huge fire engine and it takes weeks of intensive driving practise and asked a lot of questions and were fascinated by fire hydrants

“They are now checking out where the nearest one is on their street!” adds Catherine, ” A brilliant time was had by all.”
