Chorleywood Open Mic has become something of an institution for local musicians. The sessions, held on the last Saturday of the month at The Old Shepherd, are proving increasingly popular

“We try not to turn away people who turn up with a guitar but it’s best to book a slot” says organiser Paul Jones, “people are at different stages and of all ages.”

Paul and pub Landlord Billy Chuter, are both ardent music fans and enthusiastic about giving new talent a platform. They have recently launched an Open Mic website with upcoming dates, artists’ videos and a booking facility so word is spreading fast. And it’s working, plus the two men complement each other – Paul hosting and Billy as the techie, taking video footage and running the website.

Musicians love performing in the relaxed atmosphere

“It’s candlelit, there’s a welcoming camaraderie and you feel people are there for the music” says Anju who often performs in a duo with fellow muso Nij, “The star turn is Paul, the compere, who holds the night together with wit, warmth and tons of energy.”

Stomper Al is one of several performers with a nickname to suit his style..(There’s also Velvet Tony, Fast Fingers Andy, Fast Eddie) “My legs have a tendency to do their own thing to the music! It’s such a good buzz, and a great feeling even if you just impress one person.”

“It’s nerve racking but it’s not a competition” adds Steve Dix, “it’s so good when you get it right though.”

Bex is one of the few brave enough to sing a cappella

“ I don’t worry about it, nobody’s perfect and people applaud you just for having a go.”
