Chorleywood Free Church on Hillside is buzzing on Monday nights this month..

You’ll find Chorleywood Choral Society practising their pieces as usual in the Art Nouveau church whilst in the adjoining Florence Brown Hall members of Chorleywood Amateur Dramatics Society (CADS) are in full flow with rehearsals for their upcoming show. If you enjoy drama, this season’s production, The Memory of Water, shouldn’t disappoint.

Written by Shelagh Stephenson, the action revolves around three sisters preparing for their mother’s funeral
Teresa, the eldest sibling, is a compulsive organiser and alternative medicine/health food addict. Middle sister Mary, “Mum’s favourite” is a successful doctor whilst Catherine, the youngest, is an immature shopaholic with a poor relationship record.

The play received the Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 1996 when it opened in Hampstead Theatre with Alison Steadman, Julia Sawalha and Samantha Bond playing the sisters,

Whilst the trio of women reminisce about their childhoods and reflect on their mother’s Alzheimer’s Disease, personality clashes ensue fuelled by alcohol and marijuana.

Two male characters – Frank, Teresa’s long suffering husband, and Mary’s married boyfriend Mike provide a welcome balance to the bickering females.

Despite death with grief and guilt being an underlying theme, the witty lines and humorous exchanges punctuated by an element of farce results in the comedy outweighing the tragedy and the play makes a fun and entertaining night out.
