Chorleywood Primary were selected as one of 43 schools in the South East to create a mini show garden as part of the annual Budding Gardeners competition hosted by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening.  The show gardens, designed around a Wonderland theme were planted in a 1m square raised beds at Wisley and displayed over the spring half-term week.

“Everybody in the School Gardening Club put forward ideas and Headteacher Mrs Roberts chose a winner” says CWPS Gardening/Horticultural Teacher Co-ordinator, Claire Davies, “Eva Mirpuri’s Alice design was chosen. She wrote a three page list describing every plant!”

Eva used a collection of recycled props to portray the Alice story incuding a teapot and teacups as mini ponds and a caterpillar made out of flowerpots.

“It’s fair because everyone wins a prize!’ says Eva, “The other gardens were really good, one was ‘Wonderland of Doom’.

“Eva loves getting involved with growing things at home” says Mum Alison,”we have unusual veg like purple carrots and broccoli and wildflower beds. When she had the brief she sat straight down and designed the garden then went online to find plants. She mocked it up beforehand using my coloured scarves laid out as flowers. She worked hard planting at Wisley and her friend Maya helped her. Eva punched the air in excitement when she got gold!”

“ Miss Davies, my gardening teacher has taught me lots. “ adds Eva, “ We are looking forward to our next trip to Hampton Court Palace”

Visitors were able to vote for their favourite garden for the People’s Choice Award over the half term holiday .
