St Clement Danes School are gearing up for their annual Charities Week.
“Every year during the last week of the winter term three days is dedicated to fund raising for selected charities” says Juliet Flamank, one of a team of seven prefects organising the Charities Week events. “Students and staff get involved – different charities are put forward and the sixth form vote on three.“
This year it’s the turn of international charity Love 146, national charities MND and Beat and local charity St Elizabeth’s.
“Love 146 works to end child trafficking. There’s a really tragic story about the reason behind the name of the charity which is linked with a child in a brothel who was just identified with the number 146. People have become more aware of MND, Motor Neurone Disease, lately because of the viral ice bucket challenge that was started by ALS, the equivalent charity in the States. This year we also choose a second national charity; beat, which is a charity aimed at dealing with and supporting people suffering from eating disorders. Our local charity is St Elizabeth’s Centre near Stevenage that provides education and medical support to people of all ages who have epilepsy. We choose these charities as they are different from ones the school has chosen before. We do all sorts of fun events at school to raise money – we set up a nail parlour, run a tuck shop and sell Krispy Kreme donuts which always has a massive queue! The Slave Auction is really popular – students rent a sixth former for the day to wait on them by carrying their bags and taking them their lunch. Last year the Charities team raised a record £12000 which we hope to meet or even beat! “
