Children in Year 6 at Christ Church School have thoroughly enjoyed a project where their art work has supported their learning in English. They have been reading Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpugo where island castaway Kensuke, a Japanese war veteran, teaches a young boy Michael to paint seashells. Jane Broadis, class teacher says “We began by learning to working in miniature and made tiny clay food items using foil covered 2ps as plates. We then studied Japanese master painter Hokusai and reproduced tiny pencil pictures in his style. The children painted scallops, learned to write their names in Japanese characters and each made origami birds and boats with the help of two Japanese school mums. Local artist Barbara Sedassy has been hugely helpful in supporting us with her expertise and resources. The children have loved it and I am very proud of the results!”
