Glass artist Deborah Moses designed and created a bespoke glass installation (named Accord) for St Clement Danes Barbirolli Hall foyer

“We wanted something that reflected the true essence of the Barbirolli Hall which is about performing and the community” explains SCD Development Director Sarah Kitt.

Deborah was especially happy to take on the commission as it presented new challenges.

“I had to follow a very strong brief to reflect the history of the hall and its current use so I combined both traditional and contemporary elements. I worked with the specified palette of soft muted greens and blues and introduced gold leaf, both in the school motto Loyaute M’Oblige on a separate glass banner, and in the main framework. I decided to work with the elegant Gabriola font for the lettering, and crossed over two disciplines – the age old technique of coach lining that echoes the sophistication of the overall design, contrasting well with the clean, modern silhouettes.”

“Each glass panel is 8.8mm thick and over 1400mm high and very heavy. Transporting from my studio on our dairy farm in Cheshire is always a delicate mission but a delight to see in place which always represents the final piece of the jigsaw for me.” SDS were an absolute pleasure to work with on this commission, it was a great privilege.

360 Students who took part in fund raising ventures for the Hall revamp who have had their names recorded on two of the glass panels either side of the centre piece.
