Charity prefects at St Clement Danes School are helping two ex students with a shoe appeal called ‘Give Feet a Fighting Chance. Sisters Chloe Glassborow and Ruth Corbett (nee Silvester) were both Head Girls at St Clement Danes in consecutive years (92/93). The sisters are part of The Kenyan Children’s Project (The KCP). Ruth now lives in Kenya with her husband Mark, where they support the work of the charity. At The KCP they treat Tungiasis, a disease caused by a flea that buries into the flesh. Left untreated, the infestation can cause immobility, loss of limbs or even death due to secondary infections. The KCP’s aim is to stamp it out forever and the SCD students are helping the charity publicise their latest appeal asking for donations of unwanted children’s shoes.
Tania Dunkerton is acting as liaison between the school and The KCP “Last year SCD promoted a knitwear campaign and we asked Chorleywood to donate school jumpers which was tremendously successful, this year we want sturdy children’s shoes like school shoes or anything substantial with decent soles that are suitable for walking.”
“The children walk long distances and shoes are invaluable” says Ruth, “they usually walk barefoot but because this disease is so rife it is important that their feet are protected.”
Ruth and Chloe grew up in Heronsgate Road with Mum Felicity (Flicky – pictured left with the girls and their husbands). In 2005, Chloe and her husband Stuart, founded The Kenyan Children’s Project. “It started with a heart to rescue street children and the charity has continued to develop. 78 children have been rescued from vulnerability and many people are being impacted through community transformation projects, such as Give Feet a Fighting Chance.” Says Sarah Nudds co Director.
“We are hoping that the response is just as good this time if not better” says Tania, “ People can drop children’s shoes off at Chorleywood Sports – any size. It would be even better if people would stuff the shoes with pairs of socks as socks are vital for their tender feet.”
