The Chiltern Society was founded in 1965. With nearly 7,000 members it is one of the largest environmental groups in England focused on the conservation of one of the country’s most distinctive sub-regions – The Chilterns.

The Society covers 650 sq. miles of the Chilterns, an area twice as large as the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It has over 500 volunteers, who help conserve the local countryside and the character of its towns and villages and help people to enjoy the Chilterns by leading walks and cycle rides and supplying awareness information. This also includes helping to maintain footpaths and bridleways on behalf of local authorities.
