Bruce Munro’s Light Art

We are lucky to have some of the best Christmas displays in the country less than an hour away from Chorleywood, not least the one Waddesdon, the National Trust property outside Aylesbury, which once again houses the most spectacular interpretation of the Lights and Legends theme

One of the most magical parts of Waddesdon’s Winter Light is Bruce Munro’s garden light art installation, SOS which explores light, landscape, language and sound and reflects his passion for Morse Code and messaging. Munro is known for light-based installations which reflect the changing world

A line of illuminated tents inspired by Bruce’s childhood memories of camping holidays snake their way through the garden while snippets of nostalgic music and voices reminiscent of retro radio take you on a journey through time. The tents are illuminated by synchronised colourful light pulses, interrupted abruptly from time to time by Morse code distress signal in sound and light. Munro’s work often echoes human frailty and resilience and in 2012 the artist was inspired by an article about ShelterBox, who provide first response relief and shelter to people caught up in natural or humanitarian crises. The tents are reminders of people and places in need of help.

Waddesdon Christmas season runs until Sun 3 January (closed 24- 26 December)   www.waddesdon.org.uk
