Heronsgate Horticultural Show takes place this Sat 3 Sept, 3pm – 5pm, Heronsgate Village Hall

Also known as The Flower Show, Heronsgate Horticultural Show is 70 years old, having been reinstated in 1946 by Kay Bowler as a Flower Show for the Amateur and Long Lane Professional Gardeners returning from the war. During that time, there have only been two chair ladies with Kay Bowler handing over to Sally Campbell-Ritchie in the mid 1980s.

The show includes many categories for flowers and vegetables grown by residents along with home crafts such as preserves, breads and cakes.

“We feel this is a link with the original Chartists who first settled in Heronsgate 169 years ago” says Alistair Park, “ They arrived from the mills and mines of Stockport, Halifax, Nottingham and Bradford (after which the roads are named), with a vision of self-sufficiency as well as a chance to participate in democracy.

Today, we also have classes for photography and also for children’s handicraft. This year, the family of Moyra Knockold (a former resident of Heronsgate) provided a legacy to fund prizes for the children’s classes, with book tokens for Garden on a plate and Flower or Vegetable most like a person . The legacy should last for 25 years, which may see in the next generation of Heronsgate children too.”
