It all started with a knock on the door and the offer of a free survey and quotation, I knew a bit of gutter had become detached from the house and they were offering to beat any written quotations, so what did I have to lose?
In less than 10 minutes the house had been measured up, assessed and sketched and now I was happily involved in choosing whether to have round gutters or square ones and how many dry verge caps and box ends we would need. I was also secretly wondering how many teabags to get in for all the crews who would be erecting the scaffolding for the week.
But there’s no such thing as a free bargeboard and all of this could be mine for only £17,500. OK, it would mean a few sacrifices but I’m sure the children could share a pair of shoes and eat just once a day.
Reluctantly I said no but then my new found friend was able to save me £7,000 as there was a promo on. But the deal was due to end. I tried one last desperate attempt, a cash offer which brought the price down to £9,000 but still over budget.
