Students at St Clement Danes School in Chorleywood created a stunning display of 1000 poppies to mark the 100th anniversary since the start of the First World War.

Inspired by the incredible ‘river of blood’ poppy display at the Tower of London, students and staff made 1000 poppies which are displayed at the school entrance . Each poppy stands about 2 foot high and is made from acrylic (the red poppy petals with black centre) and bamboo (the green stem).  Parents, students and staff are being asked to sponsor a poppy for £2.  There are also five stained glass poppies ( 4 red and 1 white) , designed and made by staff member Caroline Davis that are available at £20 sponsorship each. All money raised goes towards Help For Heroes

The poppy field – a tribute to the remarkable Blood Swept Lands & Seas of Red at the Tower of London – was just one of the remembrance events at St Clement Danes School.

Deputy Head Teacher Mr Geoff Butler led a poignant Remembrance Service in the school’s Barbirolli Hall which was attended by students, staff, and former students. Mr Butler projected a giant image of the school’s First XI Football Team from 1913 onto a screen for students to see. He explained that three of the school’s young footballers died during the First World War. A second image of today’s First XI Football Team was then displayed, with students replicating the pose from the 100-year-old image.

The Gospel Choir sang a moving rendition of ‘All My Trials, Lord, Soon be Over’ and the Boys’ Choir performed a beautiful version of ‘No More Soldiering For Me.’  Year 12 student Miles Johnson performed The Last Post as the school observed two minutes’ silence.

The Reverend David Short, Curate of Christ Church led prayers and a blessing before Head Boy Aaron Phillips and Head Girl Maria Campanini laid wreaths at the school’s war memorial.
