Tara’s Westover’s life story as told in Educated is sober but also fascinating, optmistic and inspiring. Westover, now 31, grew up in the Idaho mountains with a family of radical Mormons. She suffered abuse and didn’t set foot in a classroom until she was seventeen. But her determination and perserverance got her to Harvard and then on to Cambridge University, UK, where she earned her doctorate.

Mercer’s book We were Warriors gives an insight into life on the frontline in Afghanistan starting with commando training and onto the chaos of battle where he experiences the fear of risking his life and the horror of friends dying. Back in the UK, seeing inadequate care for veterans and their families, he was inspired to run for Parliament.
