“ We were doing a unit on poetry as part of the curriculum” says Christ Church Yr 6 Class Teacher Jane Broadis, “We looked at rhythm, rhyme and the descriptive language and imagery poets use, especially in war poetry. We read John McCrae’s In Flanders Fields and Wilfred Owen’s Dulce et Decorum Est, contrasted the two then talked about how you can get across the senses in poetry – what you feel, hear and see and how it can take the readers to another place. The children were then set a task of writing their own poems in class and could choose to use free verse or rhyming.”

The following poems were written by Year 6 pupils at Christ Church School

Lest we Forget

by Tilly

Oh please buy a poppy on this day,

We come round with a special tray

For those who died

and the mothers that cried.

Now’s the time to stop and remember

those who died

and those who cry.

With a family or not

You will be remembered.

You have played your part

You saved our country

And will always have a place in our hearts.

War

by Jamie

The raging war goes on,

Soldiers all dead and gone.

Poppies red like crimson blood,

Soldiers marching through knee-deep mud.

Bullets ricochet off grunting tanks,

Cracks echo off gritty banks.

Gas explodes in death-green clouds

Choking comrades in misty shrouds.

Lives laid down like dominoes

Falling endlessly, row upon row.

Why do People Still not Learn?

by Daisy

Why do people still not learn

When so many people die so young?

Why do people want to kill

And spread hatred around the world?

Why do they think they don’t have enough

And think they can just have what they want?

What more do they want –

The whole world for themselves?

Why do men not understand

That being killed in war is not what you want?

Why do people still not learn?

He Went to War

by Alessia

He went to war

Years and years ago

Young and courageous

Brave and fearful

Honest and reliable

We shall remember…

Loving you with all my heart

Still wondering if you will return?

Over the trenches,

Under the barbed wire

Limping like a three-legged dog

We shall remember…

Please come back

My little one

You make me feel warm

And comforted at night

Please come home

We shall remember…

Tears streaming down

The letter has arrived

Shakily opening the flap

‘I’m sorry but your son has died’

Hearing the guns shoot,

Screaming death

We shall remember…

I shall remember.

Charge!

by Luke

Men are falling all around

As the bombs now pound and pound

On the soldiers that are coming

From the trenches, they are running.

The whistle blows, our men charge forth!

See them run to trenches north!

Bayonets slash to and fro,

Aimed against their country’s foe.

Men are shot down with bursts of fire

Caught up in twisted strands of wire

Mud-shod men charge on and on,

Being hurt with many a bomb.

We run to their trench, yes we’ve won!

We’ve destroyed them, our job is done.

War-worn German men surrender

All those lost will be remembered.
